US: W.Va. employer took kickbacks from workers
BECKLEY, W.Va. -- A Beckley man who required some of his employees to pay him cash as a condition of their employment pleaded guilty to receiving kickbacks from his former workers.
The government said 72-year-old Alfred Williams pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to receiving between $600 and $1,000 in cash each week from the workers over approximately 10 years.
According to prosecutors, Williams was the former operator of Williams Mechanical Inc., a plumbing subcontractor. Williams acknowledged that he required at least one-third of his employees to return cash to him from their paychecks as a condition of their employment.
At his sentencing in October, Williams faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. As part of a plea agreement, he also will pay up to $520,000 in restitution.
