CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- More than 70 secondary roads across West Virginia are closed because of fallen trees or power lines, but most major highways are open.

The Department of Transportation said downed power lines closed U.S. 52 between Naugatuck and U.S. 119.

A total 71 secondary roads are closed in Boone, Kanawha, Mason, Putnam, Berkeley, Mineral, Clay, Cabell, Jackson, Ritchie, Roane, Wirt, Taylor, Jefferson, Marshall, Ohio, Barbour, Greenbrier and Summers counties.

The West Virginia Courtesy Patrol is extending its hours from 16 to 21 a day to help motorists traveling interstates with fuel or other needs. The extended hours will remain in effect during a state of emergency declared by Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin after severe storms swept across the state Friday night.
