CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Army National Guard says the military uniforms that people may be seeing at The Greenbrier resort have nothing to do with storm recovery.
Lt. Col. David Lester says officers at the White Sulphur Springs resort are actually part of a specialized civil support team that was expected to be sent well before Friday's storm.
The 2012 Greenbrier Classic, a national PGA golf tournament, starts Thursday.
Lester says civil support teams go to similar high-profile events all the time for security purposes. He calls them "the tip of the spear."
Among other things, they're trained in identifying weapons of mass destruction.
Lester says there may also be military recruiters at the event, too, but the guard has not committed any significant resources to helping the resort clean up.
