WHEELING, W.Va. -- A Wheeling man charged with interstate domestic violence will spend nearly three years in prison and two years on probation.

U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld says 39-year old Curtis Smelley was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Wheeling.

Smelley had previously pleaded guilty to charges that he tried to run into his ex-girlfriend's car during a chase that began in West Virginia and ended in Ohio last summer.

He had threatened her by phone, then tried to ram her vehicle while the two were on Wheeling Island.

The victim fled across the Ohio River to Bridgeport, Ohio, and Smelley followed. He crashed into two Bridgeport police cruisers before fleeing. He was later captured.

Smelley is now in federal custody.
