BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -- West Virginia State Police say a trooper shot and killed a man who grabbed a Bluefield police officer's handgun and refused orders to drop it.

Names of the trooper and the man he shot were not immediately released.

State Police Sgt. Michael Baylous says the incident began about 11:45 p.m. Saturday when a man who had been in custody of Bluefield police stole a police cruiser and fled. After a short car chase, the man got out of the cruiser in Green Valley and took off running with Bluefield police officers and the trooper in pursuit.

Baylous says the man was able to take an officer's gun as police struggled to apprehend him.
