CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The thousands of West Virginians still without power following summer storms have U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin questioning $94 million in aid heading to Afghanistan.
The freshman Democrat spoke Wednesday against this funding meant to improve reliable electricity. He called it the starkest example of misplaced priorities.
More than 14,000 West Virginia homes and businesses remain in the dark nearly two weeks after the violent storms first struck on June 29. Officials estimate that outages affected 1.4 million of the state's 1.8 million residents at some point.
Manchin said some West Virginians won't regain water service for two or three more weeks. He referred to prior Afghan reconstruction efforts and said that when West Virginia gets help building bridges or schools, it doesn't blow them up or burn them down.
