Putnam fair begins Saturday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Officials with the Putnam County Fair have been pushing through delays caused by the recent storms and will be ready for Saturday's grand opening.

While Wayne Bennett, president of the fair, said Wednesday that everything would be set to open on schedule, he admits extreme weather has made this year a challenge.

"The weather was holding us up getting our work ready," Bennett said. "We're working long hours right now to make sure we make it."

The demolition derby, livestock auction, carnival rides, arts and crafts and contests are among other things officials have been preparing to host Saturday through July 21 at the Ernest Page Jr. Fair Grounds at the Putnam County Park on W.Va. 62 in Eleanor.

Bennett said the fair's diverse schedule of activities is what sets it apart from others around the state.

"We've got a little bit of everything. It doesn't matter what a person's interests are, we've got something there that's going to create interest for them," he said. "If they're just interested in agriculture, farm products or 4-H exhibits -- it's right there. Good entertainment, it's right there, a good carnival, it's right there."

On Saturday, country music singer Bucky Covington will perform at 8:30 p.m. An American Idol contestant during the show's fifth season, Covington recorded songs such as, "I Wanna Be That Feeling" and "A Different World."

Country music singer and songwriter Hunter Hayes will perform at 8 p.m. on July 21. Hayes is best known for hit songs, "Storm Warning" and "Wanted."

Gospel and bluegrass acts, along with local musicians, will also perform throughout the week.

Daily admission for all rides and stage shows is $8 (free for kids 5 and younger). Family Day is Sunday when admission is $5 and free for kids age 4 and younger. July 19 is Senior Day, where admission is $6 with a Golden Mountaineer Card.
