CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Thousands of customers were again without power this morning after heavy rains affected an already taxed power grid.

Power outages in West Virginia had been reduced to a few hundred late Thursday, but overnight rains knocked out electricity to thousands of customers who had previously seen it restored following a series of major storms that began on June 29. Appalachian Power officials had hoped to have electricity restored to all customers by the end of the day Thursday.

About 7,900 Appalachian Power customers are without electricity this morning, nearly 5,300 of them in Kanawha County. Kanawha County Manager Jennifer Sayre said a transmission line went down in Cross Lanes overnight, knocking out power to about 3,000 customers in the Cross Lanes, Nitro and St. Albans areas.

Sayre said repair crews hope to have electricity restored in the area this morning.

Power outages were also reported in Boone, Cabell, Fayette, Greenbrier, Jackson, Lincoln and Roane counties, some in places where electricity had previously been restored.

About 430 Mon Power customers remained without electricity this morning. Mon Power officials had hoped to have service restored to all customers today.

Appalachian Power and Mon Power provide electricity to most of the state. About 680,000 customers were without power following the first major storm.
