MARMET, W.Va. -- A Boone County man had been down on his luck but was turning his life around when he was struck and killed by a train Monday, his pastor said.

A CSX train fatally injured Johnny Mccallister, 47, at about 4:30 p.m. near the crossing at 98th Street and Ohio Avenue in Marmet. The incident remains under investigation. Marmet Police Sgt. Chuck Buttrick did not return phone calls Tuesday evening.

Pastor J.R. Mooney said Mccallister moved into his Ashford home about three months ago when he didn't have a place to live.

"He had nowhere else to go, and me and my wife were trying to help him get back on his feet," Mooney said.

Mccallister joined Mooney's congregation at Morning Star Church in Ridgeview and quickly fit in with the tight-knit community.

"Everybody enjoyed him, and he would do anything for anybody," Mooney said. "He was a goodhearted boy, goodhearted as he could be."

The congregation is devastated by the news of his death.

"We definitely believe in the power of prayer, and everybody is surely praying for his family," he said.
