Eleven arrested in storm generator thefts

By Staff reports

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Police have arrested 11 people in four counties for stealing generators after severe storms knocked out power to nearly half a million customers in the past few weeks.

State Police Sgt. Michael Baylous said police have investigated 39 generators thefts since a June 29 derecho storm, and just five of them have been recovered.

The thefts were committed against private companies and homes and hampered utility restoration and lines of communication, Baylous said in a news release.

Troopers arrested 11 people in four counties on felony theft charges:

| Robert D. Buzzard, 38, of Boone County

| Jason E. Clay, 29, of Boone County

| Troy Landon Cline, 26, of Oceana

| Shannon P. Conley, 35, of St. Albans

| Teddy R. Gill, 32, of Crab Orchard

| Phillip D. Goff, 46, of Lester

| Robert J. Goff, 48, of Lester

| Kristina Renea Griggs, 34, of Marmet

| Dustin Jack Lycans, 30, of Marmet

| Arland Toler, 74, of Hanover

| Jason D. Woods, 36, of Nitro

Police have also issued a warrant for Bryan Spangler, 39, of Hurricane, on theft charges.

"The public needs to be made aware of these people within their communities who hampered emergency and disaster response efforts," State Police Colonel C.R. Jay Smithers said in a release. "These people valued the desires of self over the critical needs of others."
