Suspects in War mayor's slaying are denied bond

WELCH, W.Va. -- Two people charged with first-degree murder in the death of War Mayor Thomas Hatcher will remain in jail without bond.

Media outlets reported that a McDowell County judge cited the risk of flight and community emotions in denying bond for 31-year-old Rebecca Lynn Hatcher, of War, and her brother, 26-year-old Earl Click, of Grundy, Va.

Circuit Court Judge Rudolph Murensky also said during Thursday's bond hearing that he had to consider evidence indicating the mayor was suffocated.

Assistant prosecutor Ed Kornish said a plastic bag was found next to the victim's head on a bed and there were signs of a struggle. But the cause of death hasn't been determined.

City workers found the mayor's body in his home on July 17.

Rebecca Hatcher is the victim's daughter-in-law.
