HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. -- Harpers Ferry will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the completion of the Appalachian Trail this weekend with a parade, music and workshops on everything from hiking to wildflowers.

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy, National Park Service and Friends of the Appalachian Trail are hosting the event Saturday and Sunday.

Speakers include author Leonard Adkins, who has hiked its entire length five times, and Lucy Seeds, daughter of the first solo female thru-hiker. Other programs include tips for female hikers, a thru-hiking workshop, a photographic tour of the trail and night sky astronomy.

Children's activities include a mini-hike and climbing wall.

Guided hikes ranging from moderate to strenuous will be offered Sunday.

The trail stretches nearly 2,200 miles from Georgia to Maine and was completed Aug. 14, 1937.
