CROSS LANES, W.Va. -- A Raleigh County man was arrested early Sunday after allegedly assaulting sheriff's deputies at a hotel in Cross Lanes.

Deputies went to the Comfort Inn in Cross Lanes at about 1:30 a.m. after a couple became combative when a bartender stopped selling them alcohol, according to Lt. Sean Crosier of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department. Crosier said Donald Charles Canaday, 48, of Crab Orchard, allegedly took off his shirt and threatened the bartender before leaving the bar with Christy Lynn Bolen, 33, of Naoma.

Deputy Hannah Shipman found the couple in a nearby hallway. Canaday allegedly spat on the deputy while being put in a sheriff's cruiser, kicked at the windows, banged his head repeatedly against the inside of the car and threatened to kill police officers, burn their houses and kill their families, Crosier said. He allegedly took a swing at Deputy Ryan Meadows while he was being booked, Crosier said.

Canaday was charged with public intoxication, two counts of battery on a police officer and obstructing an officer. He was free on bond this morning.

Bolen was taken to CARES for detoxification, Crosier said.
