Rylyn Bielinski, 6, practices giving her Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation teddy bear a shot on Wednesday. Jamie Bielinski, Rylyn's mother, said JDRF officials showed up at the hospital for support the day after Rylyn learned she has Type 1 diabetes, just two weeks before her fifth birthday.
While most kids can grab a handful of snacks and not think anything about it, Rylyn Bielinski has to weigh everything she eats, watching for carbohydrates and sugar. The 6-year-old has her fingers pricked 12 times a day to monitor her blood sugar levels.
Biscuit is one goldendoodle that Scott Smith, of Tidewater K9 Cares, is training as a diabetic alert dog. Dogs are placed based on the energy level of the family (how active they are) and Rylyn Bielinski said she hopes Biscuit is her future diabetic alert dog.
