'Hollow' team plans final film workshop Saturday

WELCH, W.Va. -- Filmmakers working on a documentary about the challenges facing McDowell County will hold their final community storytelling workshop this weekend in Welch.

The event is Saturday at Mount View High School, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The crew of "Hollow: An Interactive Documentary'' has been filming since early summer.

The project name was inspired by the 2009 book "Hollowing Out the Middle.'' It contends the brain drain and flight from rural American communities hurts America's economy and future.

The Hollow team will screen some of the work they and community members have done so far at Saturday's workshop. It's also looking for photo and video submissions.

Project director Elaine McMillion says residents are using five cameras to tell their own stories, producing what she calls thoughtful and beautiful work.
