PARKERSBURG, W.Va. -- A former Parkersburg police sergeant has been given a suspended sentence for his guilty plea involving an altercation with a suspect.

Media outlets report Joshua Adam Vensel also received a year of probation and 200 hours of community service at his sentencing Thursday in Wood County Circuit Court.

The 29-year-old Vensel pleaded guilty to a battery charge in May. He surrendered his law enforcement certificate as a condition of his plea.

Vensel was accused of hitting a man being booked into the Wood County Holding Facility last October on charges of obstruction, disorderly conduct and public intoxication.
