HOMETOWN, W.Va. --  A man who struck a utility pole was ejected from his vehicle and died, Putnam County officials explained Saturday.

According to police, Gary Alan Massey, 36, of Hurricane, was driving his Nissan Sentra south on W.Va. 62 around 8:30 a.m. Saturday when he apparently drove off the road and hit the pole.

Emergency responders took him to the Teays Valley division of Charleston Area Medical Center where he was declared dead.
