CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Police have identified a U.S. Navy sailor who died Saturday after falling between the westbound and eastbound lanes of Interstate 64.

Marrion Phillips, 26, of Ripley, "was attempting to cross the interstate from the westbound to the eastbound lanes and accidentally fell through the 4-foot gap separating both bridges," Charleston Police Sgt. Eric Hodges said in a statement.

Police said Phillips landed north of Kanawha Boulevard near Magic Island. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Phillips was an active-duty member of the Navy and had returned just last month from an overseas deployment. He leaves behind a wife and two small children, Hodges said.
