Event in Hinton to mark 1812 John Marshall foray

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Humanities Council will commemorate the 1812 Marshall Expedition with a presentation at 7 p.m. Sept. 28 in the courtroom of the Summers County Courthouse in Hinton. The Summers County Historical Society will provide refreshments following the program. The event is free.

New River Gorge National River Ranger Frank Sellers will present a program titled "The John Marshall Expedition: An 1812 Survey through the Virginias."

In 1812, John Marshall led a 227-mile expedition over the Allegheny Mountains to seek a canal route between Richmond and the Ohio River. Marshall was chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court at the time.
