St. Albans council takes step toward emergency weather preparation
ST. ALBANS, W.Va. -- St. Albans City Council took the first step toward being more prepared if the weather knocks out power for several days.
Council members approved the purchase of a nearly $21,000 generator for the Hansford Center.
"This should give us the opportunity then to keep the center open and heated or cooled if another emergency should happen," said Mayor Dick Callaway.
The generator will upgrade what is currently at the center, and be able to accommodate 200 to 300 people.
Callaway said additional generators will be purchased in the future for the two fire stations, city hall and police station, which are also emergency shelter locations.
At its peak, the June 29 derecho and subsequent storms knocked out power to about 680,000 customers across West Virginia.
Council members also approved a resolution for the city to partner with the state Division of Highways to continue the streetscape projects.
The city received a $250,000 grant to fund the work.
New sidewalks and street lights will be installed along Main Street between Second and Third streets, down Second Street to Kanawha Terrace, and down both sides of Kanawha Terrace starting at Second Street -- until the money runs out.
