CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Folks hoping to get a caffeine fix at the Starbucks in Charleston Town Center will have go elsewhere for the rest of this week.

The popular coffee shop closed Wednesday morning for renovations at the mall's center court and will reopen sometime next week, Town Center marketing director Lisa McCracken said Wednesday.

"It's just for a few days," McCracken said. "They did not open today. They're closed as we finish demolition at center court and clean up the debris."

Graycorp, a Chicago-based contractor for the mall's owners, Forest City Enterprises, has been working since mid-May on the mall's interior. The $7 million makeover, which includes new floor surfaces, paint, restrooms and more than four miles of railings, should be done by November in time for the Christmas shopping season.

Despite an earlier promise that Starbucks would not be disturbed, McCracken said it made sense to close the store as contractors began removing the planters, pipes and floor tiles adjacent to it.

"It's the only store closing that's happened during the renovations," and no other store closings are planned, she said.

The store could reopen early next week, or later, depending on how long the demolition and cleanup take.

Meanwhile, contractors have completed much of the demolition of the first-floor Center Court, she said.

"We've already started the foundation for the new fountain and wooden forms for the base of the fountain have been delivered," McCracken said.
