Verizon plans cell towers on W.Va. Turnpike

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Verizon and state officials are working on an agreement to improve cell phone coverage along the West Virginia Turnpike.

Parkways Authority general manager Greg Barr says Verizon has identified two sites where it wants to install cell towers. One is near the Morton Travel Plaza and the other is at the Chelyan toll plaza.

Verizon also is interested in four other sites along the 88-mile toll road between Charleston and Princeton.

The Register-Herald says Barr disclosed the plan Thursday during an authority meeting at Tamarack in Beckley. He says Verizon, the authority and the Division of Highways are close to an agreement.

Consultant Randy Epperly says a major snowstorm that stranded motorists overnight in December 2009 underscored the inadequate cell phone coverage.
