CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Division of Culture and History is looking for the best photos and essays from West Virginia high school students as part of the state's 150th birthday celebration.

Essays of up to 550 words can be submitted for judging on topics related to the Civil War and West Virginia's statehood. Students also can submit photos of historic sites related to the sesquicentennial.

The entry deadline is Nov. 1. Cash prizes will be awarded for the top entries. The best photos will be included in an exhibit that will open next year. A winning essay will be selected for publication in the state's Goldenseal magazine.

West Virginia joined the Union as the 35th state on June 20, 1863.
