HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Several abandoned buildings in Huntington are about to meet the wrecking ball.

The buildings in the Fairfield neighborhood are being demolished as part of a local, state and federal project to revitalize the area. Crews from the West Virginia National Guard and the state Division of Highways brought in heavy equipment this week to begin the monthlong process.

National Guard Maj. Brent Schultz says about 50 homes will be torn down.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin plan to speak at the site this afternoon.
