Saturday service honors state's Korean War vets

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Pentagon official will help will lead a ceremony honoring West Virginia's Korean War veterans this weekend.

Navy Commander John O'Brien will present certificates of appreciation to veterans of every military branch, thanking them for their service and sacrifice. O'Brien is a member of the U.S. Department of Defense 60th Anniversary of the Korean War Commemoration Committee.

The West Virginia National Guard and the state Department of Veterans Assistance are hosting the event, set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Culture Center in Charleston. It will include displays of military vehicles and weapons, as well as live entertainment.

The ceremony at the West Virginia Veterans Memorial is set for 11 a.m.

State officials say veterans who would like to receive a certificate should call 304-541-9603.
