Handlan Chapter of Brooks Bird Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at the South Charleston Public Library for the "fall migration" ice cream social. Anyone interested in birding is welcome.

Greenbrier Historical Society and North House Museum is offering a history-related after-school program called Hands-On History for kids in grades four through six from 4 to 5 p.m. Sept. 17 at the North House Museum. Workshops will provide learning opportunities that will complement the school curriculum. Each month, children will create a takeaway project or participate in an interesting activity that will provide focus for a dialogue on a particular history-related topic that will often include West Virginia history tie-ins. This month's workshop will focus on Chief Cornstalk and his daughter Aracoma. Children will create gourd-head puppets to take home. Workshops are free, but space is limited. Charleston Cadet Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol meets from 6:30 to 9 p.m. each Tuesday at the Air National Guard base on Coonskin Drive. Civil Air Patrol is open to 12- to 18-year-olds for the cadet program, and all others for the senior program. Civil Air Patrol is an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, and is an all-volunteer organization working on aerospace education, disaster relief, emergency services and more.
