Man dies as police execute search warrant
Police say a man died as police searched his home for a fugitive in Doddridge County.
The incident happened Thursday as West Virginia state troopers were executing a search warrant at the residence of 71-year-old Elton Wine of West Union.
Officers were looking for John Bowman, who had active warrants for manufacturing with the intent to deliver marijuana, according to a press release from the West Virginia State Police.
Police say both Wine and Bowman have "extensive and violent criminal histories."
While troopers were executing the search warrant, Wine was uncooperative and tried to interfere with the search for Bowman, police said.
"After gaining Mr. Wine's cooperation, he indicted he was having difficulty breathing at which time members provided assistance and first aid and subsequently summoned EMS which was stationed nearby," according to the release.
Wine then become unresponsive and died, according to police.
Wine's remains were taken to the office of the chief medical examiner to determine the cause of death.
Police arrested Bowman the following evening along the road near Wine's residence. Bowman was taken into custody without incident, police say.
He is charged with felony cultivation of marijuana. He was taken to the North Central Regional Jail.
