HINTON, W.Va. -- A state highways official says the first phase of a scenic parkway project in southern West Virginia is on schedule and is expected to be completed in November.

Division of Highways project engineer Duane Blevins tells The Register-Herald that about 70 percent of the New River Parkway's first segment is complete. The segment will cross New River and Madams Creek in Hinton and run along New River toward Sandstone.

The New River Parkway has been in the works since 1985 when legislation authorizing the project was approved. When completed, the 10-mile parkway will connect Hinton with Interstate 64.
