Ex-state officer's sexual misconduct trial begins

WHEELING, W.Va. -- A former Wheeling police officer's sexual misconduct case is going to trial.

Media outlets say Matthew Kotson's trial is scheduled to begin this morning with opening statements. The case could go to the jury on Wednesday.

Kotson was indicted in January on sexual abuse, sexual assault and burglary charges. Authorities say four women accused him of sexual misconduct.

Today's trial on sexual abuse charges is the second of four scheduled in the case. The first trial was canceled in July after Ohio County prosecutor David Cross told the judge that witnesses failed to cooperate, and the alleged victim then refused to testify.
