NITRO, W.Va. -- A Nitro man was arrested Tuesday morning after allegedly ransacking a house and making off with a safe.

Officers went to a house on 28th Street at about 1:45 a.m. to investigate a report of a burglary, according to Patrolman Ray Blake of the Nitro Police Department. When they got there, they found the front door open, a rear window screen torn out and the house ransacked.

The resident wasn't home, but police tracked him down, Blake said. On inspecting the house, the resident told police his safe was missing.

Later, Richard Matthew Gladfelter, 35, of Nitro, was found hiding behind a house on 39th Street, Blake said. The safe was found hidden in a bush behind Gladfelter's house on 31st Street.

Blake said the safe was opened, and the resident's wallet was found inside.

Gladfelter was arrested and charged with nighttime burglary. He was being held Tuesday in the Western Regional Jail.
