CLARKSBURG, W.Va. -- A federal inmate will spend more time behind bars for escaping from a halfway house.

U.S. Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld II said 35-year-old David Van Smith was sentenced to a year and a day in prison after pleading guilty last week to escape. The sentence is to be served consecutively with a 100-month sentence for crack cocaine distribution.

Smith left a halfway house in Clarksburg without permission on June 29 and didn't return.
