Kroger recalls spinach sold in W.Va.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Kroger is recalling some of its spinach, including some sold at stores in eastern West Virginia and the state's Northern Panhandle, because of the risk of listeria monocytogenes contamination.
The grocery chain is recalling 10-ounce packages of Fresh Selections Tender Spinach. Affected spinach has a "best if used by" date of Sept. 16.
Listeria monocytogenes causes listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, pregnant women, newborns and adults with weakened immune systems, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Systems for listeriosis include fever and muscle aches, which are sometimes preceded by diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms, according to the CDC.
Pregnant women usually have flu-like symptoms, but the infection can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery or a life-threatening infection in a newborn, according to the CDC.
Besides West Virginia, the spinach was sold in stores in Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, North Carolina, and Virginia. It was not clear exactly which stores in West Virginia sold the tainted spinach, but a news release from the company said it was "Eastern WV" and the "N. West Virginia panhandle."
Customers may return the spinach to Kroger for a full refund, according to the store. Call 1-800-KROGERS for more information.
