CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Federal officials have reconsidered their denial of individual assistance for residents in four West Virginia counties who sustained property losses during a fierce June windstorm.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin announced Wednesday that the Federal Emergency Management Agency approved individual assistance for residents in Fayette, Kanawha, Nicholas and Raleigh counties.
The June 29 derecho and subsequent storms left three people dead and more than 680,000 customers without electricity across the state. FEMA initially denied the state's request for federal individual assistance to help residents recover.
Tomblin appealed the denial in August.
The governor says officials are still evaluating whether to add more counties to the federal disaster declaration.
