NITRO, W.Va. -- One person was killed and another was injured when a sport-utility vehicle struck them Wednesday night in Nitro.

Curtis Schoolcraft of Poca was driving a 2007 Saturn Vue south on Cross Lanes Drive just before 11 p.m. when he struck Henry Stuck, 40, and Sara K. Lowery, 22, both of St. Albans, The two were in the road, according to a news release from the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department.

Lowery was pronounced dead at the scene. Stuck was taken to CAMC General Hospital, where a nursing supervisor said he was in satisfactory condition Thursday afternoon.

Kanawha County emergency dispatchers originally said Wednesday night that three people had been injured, but the Sheriff's Department said that was not the case.

Capt. J.S. Bailes, who is leading the investigation, said Schoolcraft was properly operating his vehicle at the time of the incident.

A witness reported that Stuck and Lowery "may have been involved in some type of disturbance just prior to the incident," according to the sheriff's department.
