Ex-W.Va. officer acquitted of 1 sex abuse charge
WHEELING, W.Va. -- A former Wheeling police officer has been acquitted of one sexual abuse charge. But jurors couldn't reach a verdict on a second count.
Media outlets say the jury announced its verdict in Matthew Kotson's trial around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday after nine hours of deliberation over two days.
Ohio County Circuit Court Judge Arthur Recht declared a mistrial on the second sexual abuse charge. A new trial likely will be scheduled in early April 2013.
Kotson was indicted in January on sexual abuse, sexual assault and burglary charges. Authorities say four women accused him of sexual misconduct.
This week's trial is the second of four scheduled in the case. The first trial was canceled in June after special prosecutor David Cross told the judge that witnesses failed to cooperate.
