MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- In just one week, participants in Morgantown's urban deer hunt are feeding a lot of hungry people.

On Wednesday evening, they donated 543 pounds of venison to local shelters and food pantries

The 2nd Annual Urban Deer Archery Hunt runs from Sept. 8 through Dec. 31 for 77 bow hunters.

Each archer can take seven deer -- both bucks and does -- within designated hunting areas.

They then have the option of donating their kill to Backwoods Taxidermy, which processes the deer and distributes the meat.

Hunt organizer Rick Bebout says the first donation went to the Bartlett House, which will use the ground venison in hot meals.

City officials say they'll provide an update on the deer kills near the end of October and again in January.
