Capitol Street bar closed after weekend shooting

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Capitol Street bar has been closed after a weeked altercation in which three men were shot.

The state Alcohol Beverage Control Administration pulled the liquor license for the Sky Lounge, following the early Saturday morning incident, Mayor Danny Jones said Sunday. Jones schedule a news conference Sunday afternoon outside the bar at 26 Capitol St.

Charleston Police were called to bar just before 2:30 a.m. Saturday for a report of shots fired, police said.

An argument inside the bar escalated when the people involved were asked to leave, police said. Once outside, an unknown man began shooting.

The shooter, who police said was a black male in his mid-to-late 20s approximately 6"1' and 200 pounds, was seen shooting into the ground and back at the entrance of the bar.

Two victims, Shawn Williams, 23, of Charleston and Varryl Venson, 44, of Charleston, were shot while they were still inside the bar, according to police.

The third victim, William Wallace, 34, of South Charleston was involved in the original altercation and was shot in the street, police said.

All three victims were transported to CAMC General Hospital for treatment. None of the injures were considered life threatening.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call the Criminal Investigation Division at 304-348-6480.
