LOOKOUT, W.Va. -- A Fayette County man is recovering in the hospital after police said he was hit with a steel bar several times in the head and torso Sunday night.

Someone called 911 dispatchers at 9:17 p.m. to report an altercation at a residence along U.S. 60 in Lookout, according to a news release from Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler.

Deputies arrived and found James Woodrow Settle III, 37, of Ansted, bleeding heavily from a head injury and "stumbling around" in the roadway, Kessler said.

Settle had allegedly sent threatening text messages to a person and showed up at that person's house to start a fight. But the person, whom Kessler did not name, then allegedly struck Settle several times in the head and torso with a steel bar when Settle advanced in a threatening manner.

Paramedics took Settle by helicopter to CAMC General Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition Monday.

Kessler said deputies are waiting to interview Settle before determining, with Fayette County prosecutors, if charges should be filed.
