CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A fire service line for a building broke near the intersection of Lee Street and Capitol Street on Tuesday morning, sending water several inches deep rushing into the streets and slowing traffic.

West Virginia American Water Co. received a call about the problem at about 9:20 a.m., said Laura Jordan, a spokeswoman for the company. Company crews shut off water to the area, allowing the backed-up water to drain, she said.

A building owner, whom Jordan could not immediately identify, will be responsible for repairs to the line, which connects the building's plumbing to its water meter.
