INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- A police officer was injured by metal shrapnel during a gun training exercise at the State Police Academy target range in Institute Wednesday evening.

State Police Sgt. Michael Baylous said officers with a law enforcement agency, which he didn't identify but said was not the State Police, were conducting qualification training at about 6:30 p.m. by shooting a metal target.

A metal piece was shot off the target and it struck an officer, Baylous said. The injury was not life threatening. He said more details would be released once the officer's family had been notified.
