W.Va. Democrats push robocalls in wake of complaints
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia Democrats are continuing to link Republican lawmakers to recent legislation targeted by GOP attack ads.
Democrats launched a new wave of automatic phone calls Thursday. These tell Ohio and Raleigh county voters that their Republican legislators helped hike a coal tax and pass a bill addressing public retiree benefits.
The Republican Governors Association criticizes both bills in TV ads attacking Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin. A Democrat, Tomblin signed each measure.
Democratic Party officials say these new calls identify who recorded them. But their earlier round of robocalls did not. That violates a 1991 federal law.
A GOP legislative candidate complained Thursday to the Federal Communications Commission.
Democrats say they were unaware of the disclosure requirement. They also allege Republicans violated this law with earlier robocalls.
