HINTON, W.Va. -- A West Virginia business has secured a $55 million federal contract to continue stabilization and safety improvements at Bluestone Dam in Hinton.

Rep. Nick Rahall and Sens. Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin announced the contract for Heeter Construction Company on Thursday.

Officials say the contract awarded by the Army Corps of Engineers covers improvements that include installing 115 anchors along the dam.

It's the latest step in the work to ensure the dam's stability and provides an increase in the amount of flood waters that can safely be held by the dam.

Rahall says the dam has provided nearly $5 billion in flood protection and has served as a recreation and tourism springboard.
