W.Va. Board of Education to hear propane bus proposal
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia's goal of converting more vehicles to natural gas soon could reach its youngest citizens.
The state Board of Education will consider changing its policy to allow the use of propane-powered school buses at its meeting today. State policy currently requires only diesel fuel to be used.
The State Journal reports that some counties once had buses that ran on natural gas but that they were replaced.
There's a larger initial investment -- about $85,000 for a diesel-powered bus versus around $95,000 for one fueled with propane. But the board is expected to hear a presentation that counties could save more than $27,000 over the life of every propane-powered bus.
