CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A female driver slammed into an ambulance Tuesday night before fleeing the accident scene.

Just before 8:30 p.m., a Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority Ambulance Unit was turning left from U.S. 119 into the lot of Hardee's Restaurant in Big Chimney when a female driving a white Buick came across the parking lot "at a high rate of speed and smashed into the ambulance," according to Capt. Sean Crosier with the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department.

The Buick struck the driver's door area of the ambulance. Thomas Robinson, 26, of Cross Lanes and passenger Karrie Cunningham, 34, were taken to CAMC General Hospital for treatment.

According to the sheriff's department, the Buick sustained heavy front-end damage from the accident. Medics told the sheriff's department the female suspect appeared to be "under the influence of an unknown substance."

The driver fled north on U.S. 119.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office at 304-357-0169. Callers can remain anonymous.
