W.Va. PAC that challenged finance law raises $50K
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A West Virginia political action committee has raised $50,000 after winning the right to unlimited contributions.
Stay the Course West Virginia reports collecting that amount between May 21 and Sept. 23.
Most of that money came after a federal judge temporarily blocked the state's $1,000 contribution cap for independent PACs in August.
Stay the Course sued over that cap, citing recent federal campaign finance rulings.
The PAC says it plans to support incumbents who have improved West Virginia, and target their opponents.
The main company of industrialist James "Buck'' Harless contributed half the PAC's money. Harless was a major fundraiser for former President George W. Bush. But Harless is supporting Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, a Democrat, this election.
Several other Tomblin donors also are among Stay the Course's contributors.
