CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A former federal prosecutor fired by then-President George W. Bush is playing a role in West Virginia's governor's race.
Republican candidate Bill Maloney picked Kasey Warner Wednesday to co-chair a veterans group for his campaign.
Warner was Bush's U.S. attorney for southern West Virginia when the White House fired him in 2005. A state legislative audit later revealed Warner had offered to contribute secretly to a 2004 GOP political campaign. Warner has said he never followed through on the offer, and discounted that as a reason for his firing.
Maloney's campaign says it's aware of the firing, but cited Warner's military service. The retired U.S. Army colonel is a West Point graduate whose assignments include Special Operations Command.
Retired Army Gen. Doc Bronsen and Sgt. James Vickers are Warner's co-chairs.
