PARKERSBURG, W.Va. -- Police said a Parkersburg man admitted Thursday to inflicting injuries to his girlfriend's 3-year-old son, which led to the boy's death.
At about 1 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to Camden Clark Medical Center in Parkersburg in regards to a "seriously injured" boy, according to a news release issued by the Parkersburg Police Department. The boy was later transferred by medical helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries Wednesday.
On Thursday, Parkersburg detectives interviewed the biological mother's boyfriend, Matthew Edward Lamp, 29, of Parkersburg. Lamp is incarcerated at North Central Regional Jail on unrelated charges and detectives brought him into the police station for questioning, according to the release.
The victim, identified as D.K., was left in Lamp's care Sunday, according to a criminal complaint filed in Wood County Magistrate Court. Lamp admitted to detectives that he struck the boy, according to the complaint.
Lamp was charged with the death of a child by a parent or guardian. He was arraigned in Wood County and ordered held without bail in North Central Regional Jail. If convicted, Lamp faces no less than 10 years and no more than 40 years in prison.
