Kanawha County Public Library System is offering a fine-free week this week as it celebrates the approaching West Virginia Book Festival. Patrons may return overdue items to any Kanawha County Public Library location and no fines will be charged for the returned items; however, the $15 long overdue fee for items more than 45 days past due will not be waived.
Putnam County Parks and Recreation is sponsoring a Haunting Halloween from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Oct. 19, 20, 26 and 27 at the Wave Pool in Hurricane. Putnam County Parks and Recreation will also host a Halloween Party/Dance from 7 to 11 p.m. on Oct. 19, for adults 21 years and over, in the Valley Park Community Center. Costumes are optional. Prizes for the best male, female and couple will be awarded. For information, call 304-562-0518, ext. 11.
Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association will hold a Howl-o-Ween Pet Parade and Pageant on Saturday at the Kanawha-Charleston Animal Shelter. Registration starts at 10 a.m.; parade begins at 11 a.m. Entry fee is $5 or a bag of dog food. Prizes will be awarded. A hot dog sale will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Rain date is Oct. 20. West Virginia Institute for Spirituality will offer a seminar titled "The Spirituality of the Story" from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Blessed John XXIII Pastoral Center. Lunch included. CEU credits for social workers, registered nurses and licensed professional counselors are available. An offering of $40 is suggested and $50 for CEU recipients.
Marmet Recreation Center will feature the Dave Runion Duo at a dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the center in Marmet. Admission is $8 for adults. A concession stand will sell hot dogs. The dances are family-oriented. For information, call Barry Pauley at 304-949-9692.
Kanawha Valley Poets will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Dunbar Public Library. The theme for poems this month is the color "orange." The prompts for poems are "fire" and "leaves." Mothers Against Drunk Driving will have their sixth annual Shannon Brown Memorial Gospel Sing at 3 p.m. Sunday at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Washington Street West. Brown was killed by a drunken driver in 2006 and left behind two small children. For information, call Margie Sadler at 304-757-0775 or 1-888-757-7090.
