Cheat Lake bridge being renamed for Vietnam vet MIA

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The Interstate 68 bridge across Cheat Lake has a new name.

Starting Saturday, the span outside Morgantown will be known as the Lt. Col. Carroll Baxter Lilly Memorial Bridge.

The Legislature approved the naming to honor a Morgantown pilot still missing in action from the Vietnam War.

Lilly graduated from Morgantown High School in 1958, then joined the U.S. Air Force as a navigator and pilot.

The Dominion Post says he was shot down over Laos in 1971, and neither his plane nor his body was ever found.

He was awarded a Purple Heart, a Distinguished Flying Cross, an Air Medal and an Air Force Commendation Medal, among other honors.

His oldest brother is attending a dedication ceremony at the bridge.
