BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Thousands of volunteers will perform more than 350 community service projects in Southern West Virginia during a five-day initiative next year.

The Reaching the Summit Community Service Initiative will be held in nine counties during the Boy Scouts of America's National Jamboree in July 2013. The jamboree will be held at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in Fayette County.

The Beckley Register-Herald newspaper says the volunteers will include up to 40,000 Scouts and more than 250 young adults from the Americorps/National Civilian Community Corps.

The Citizens Conservation Corps of West Virginia is coordinating the initiative.
